Rogelio “Roger” Nores, a close friend of Liam Payne, believes the singer’s death was an “extremely unfortunate” series of events. Nores was one of the last people to see Payne alive, and he described their final encounter as ordinary. “He was doing ok, he was being Liam,” Nores told CNN en Español. According to Nores, Payne was happy and enjoying life, contrary to someone struggling with depression or sadness.
Nores and Payne had traveled to Buenos Aires together for a personal trip and to attend Niall Horan’s concert. During their trip, they spent time with Payne’s girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, engaging in normal activities like bowling and movie nights. Cassidy left Buenos Aires days before Payne’s death to return home. Nores mentioned that Payne had stayed sober during the trip but was provided with drugs shortly before his death, which included alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant.
Despite the toxicology report, Nores doesn’t believe the substances directly caused Payne’s death. Instead, he thinks it was a tragic accident. “I don’t think the drugs killed him. I think this was really unfortunate and a proper accident,” Nores said.
Nores and Payne developed a close friendship after meeting in 2020. Nores is now focused on grieving and moving forward, describing Payne as “one of the best friends I ever had in my life”.
Five individuals were initially charged in connection with Payne’s death, including Nores. However, charges against Nores and two others were later dismissed. A hotel employee and a local waiter remain detained on charges related to supplying Payne with cocaine.
