Bronx, NY – The New York Yankees have placed infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Wednesday, May 1st, due to a right oblique strain. The team announced the move prior to their Friday night game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Chisholm reportedly sustained the injury during Tuesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. He appeared to tweak his side during his first at-bat but remained in the game to hit a double before being replaced by a pinch-runner after reaching third base. He was held out of Wednesday’s lineup, and after undergoing tests on Thursday, the decision was made to place him on the injured list.
Speaking after Tuesday’s game, Chisholm downplayed the severity of the injury, stating, “I’m really not as concerned as everybody else. I feel pretty good. I’ve torn my oblique before, so I know it’s not torn or anything. It was just to be cautious.”
Despite his optimism, the Yankees have opted for caution, sidelining the infielder for at least the next ten days. Oblique strains can be tricky injuries with variable recovery timelines, and the team will likely monitor his progress closely before setting a firm return date.
In a corresponding move, the Yankees have recalled infielder Jorbit Vivas from their Triple-A affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Vivas, who has been on the major league roster briefly in the past but has yet to appear in a game, will provide infield depth in Chisholm’s absence.
Chisholm, 27, has been a valuable addition to the Yankees since being acquired last season. While his batting average stands at .181 through 30 games, he has provided significant power with seven home runs and 17 RBIs, along with six stolen bases. His absence will test the Yankees’ infield depth, particularly with his ability to play both second and third base.
The Yankees will hope for a swift recovery for Chisholm as they navigate the early part of the season and aim to maintain their strong position in the American League East. The performance of Jorbit Vivas in his absence will be closely watched as the team looks to fill the void left by their injured infielder.
