Salt Lake City, May 16, 2025 — A shocking incident unfolded Friday morning at Salt Lake City International Airport, where three government officials were shot in what authorities are describing as a targeted attack. The shooting occurred just before 10:00 a.m. local time near a restricted terminal area, sparking immediate lockdown protocols and a rapid response from law enforcement.
Officials confirmed that the three victims — all part of a visiting federal delegation — were critically injured and rushed to the University of Utah Hospital. Their identities have not been released pending notification of family members.
According to witnesses, the shooter appeared to know the victims and opened fire without warning. “It was chaos. We heard loud pops, and then people were screaming and ducking for cover,” said James Rodriguez, a traveler who was near the security checkpoint at the time. “It was clear something very serious was happening.”
Salt Lake City Police, along with federal agencies, quickly secured the scene. The suspected shooter, whose name has not been disclosed, was apprehended minutes after the attack. Authorities are investigating the motive and whether the suspect had any political or ideological affiliations.
Governor Spencer Cox released a statement expressing shock and calling the attack “an assault on public service and the safety of our community.” He also praised first responders for their swift action in preventing further harm.
All outbound flights from the airport were temporarily grounded, and heightened security measures remain in place as the investigation continues. Passengers are advised to check with airlines for updates.
The FBI and Homeland Security have joined the case, treating it as a high-priority federal investigation. More details are expected in a press conference later today. The condition of the injured officials remains critical but stable, according to hospital sources.
