Albany, NY – May 18, 2025
A devastating fire broke out late Sunday afternoon at Albany’s largest and most popular restaurant, The Grand Hearth, leaving multiple people dead and several others injured. Emergency services were called to the scene around 4:30 p.m. after thick smoke and flames were reported billowing from the rear of the historic building located on Pearl Street.
Authorities confirmed that at least four people have tragically lost their lives, with several others hospitalized in critical condition due to smoke inhalation and burns. The identities of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as diners and staff attempted to flee the engulfed building. “People were screaming, trying to break windows to get out. It all happened so fast,” said Michael Donnelly, a bystander who was walking nearby when the fire erupted.
Firefighters from multiple stations across Albany battled the intense flames for over three hours before finally bringing the fire under control. The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation, but officials say there is no immediate evidence of foul play.
Mayor Kathy Sheehan addressed the public during a brief press conference, calling the incident a “horrific and heartbreaking tragedy” and assuring residents that a full investigation is underway.
The Grand Hearth, known for its expansive dining halls and iconic local cuisine, has long been a centerpiece of Albany’s culinary scene. The loss has shaken the community, with many mourning not just the destruction of a beloved establishment, but the loss of local lives.
Counseling services are being made available for victims’ families and employees. A community vigil is expected to be held in the coming days to honor the lives lost.
More updates will follow as the investigation continues.
