Baton Rouge, LA – May 24, 2025 — Tragedy struck Baton Rouge this afternoon as a massive fire tore through the city’s largest and most popular restaurant, leaving multiple people dead and several others injured.
The blaze broke out around 2:30 PM at Maison Rouge, a sprawling upscale dining and event venue located in the heart of downtown. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion shortly before flames erupted from the building’s east wing. Within minutes, thick black smoke engulfed the surrounding blocks, and emergency responders arrived on the scene.
Authorities have confirmed that at least five people have died in the incident, including two restaurant staff members and three local patrons. An additional dozen people were hospitalized, several of whom remain in critical condition. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
“This is a devastating day for Baton Rouge,” said Fire Chief Harold DeVille during a press briefing. “Maison Rouge was more than a restaurant — it was a landmark. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We’re doing everything we can to determine the cause and ensure no one is left inside.”
Initial investigations suggest the fire may have started in the kitchen area, though officials have not ruled out the possibility of a gas leak. The building, known for its historic architecture and high ceilings, collapsed partially before the flames were brought under control.
Local roads remain closed as emergency crews continue recovery efforts and investigate the scene. Mayor Sharon Weston Broome has promised a full investigation and declared city support for those affected.
