BREAKING: Fire Erupts at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, Operations Halted
Seattle, WA – May 18, 2025 — A major fire broke out at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA) this afternoon, prompting an emergency evacuation and a full suspension of flight operations.
Port of Seattle authorities confirmed that the fire began shortly after 2:15 PM in the central terminal area, near the food court. Thick black smoke was seen billowing from the main concourse, causing panic among passengers and staff. Emergency response teams arrived within minutes and began evacuating the terminals while fire crews worked to contain the blaze.
Initial reports suggest the fire may have started due to an electrical malfunction in a maintenance area, but officials have not ruled out other causes. No injuries have been confirmed at this time, though several individuals were treated on-site for smoke inhalation.
“We are working closely with local fire departments, the FAA, and TSA to ensure everyone’s safety and to determine the cause of the incident,” said Port of Seattle spokesperson Maria Evans during a press briefing. “All incoming and outgoing flights are currently grounded.”
Thousands of passengers were stranded on the tarmac and in surrounding terminals, and flights bound for SEA are being diverted to alternative airports including Portland, Spokane, and Vancouver, BC. The FAA has issued a temporary ground stop for all air traffic headed to the airport.
As firefighting efforts continue, travelers are advised to check with their airlines for updates and avoid the airport area until further notice. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, and authorities will launch a formal investigation once the fire is under control.
This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
