Columbus, OH – May 16, 2025
A devastating fire broke out earlier today at Columbus’ largest and most popular restaurant, The Grand Hearth, leaving the community in shock and mourning. Officials have confirmed that several people have died in the blaze, with others seriously injured or missing.
The fire erupted shortly before noon, rapidly engulfing the massive two-story establishment located on North High Street. The restaurant, known for its upscale dining experience and high-capacity seating, was near full occupancy at the time of the incident.
According to Columbus Fire Department Chief Laura Simmons, emergency crews responded within minutes of the first 911 call. “This was a severe and fast-moving fire,” Simmons said during a press briefing. “Despite our rapid response, the flames had already spread through much of the structure.”
Initial reports suggest that at least five individuals have lost their lives, with dozens more treated for smoke inhalation and burn injuries. Several victims remain in critical condition at area hospitals. Authorities have not yet released the names of those killed, pending family notifications.
Witnesses described scenes of panic and confusion as diners and staff scrambled to escape the flames. “People were screaming and pushing to get out,” said Marcus Hale, a local resident who was dining nearby. “It was chaos.”
Fire investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire, though early speculation points to a possible kitchen-related explosion. Officials have not confirmed whether foul play is suspected.
Mayor Lydia Martin expressed her condolences and vowed full support for victims and their families. “This is a heartbreaking day for Columbus. We will do everything in our power to support those affected and uncover how this tragedy happened.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information or footage from the scene to contact the Columbus Fire Department.
