Topeka, KS — May 24, 2025
A devastating fire broke out late Saturday afternoon at Topeka’s largest and most popular restaurant, The Prairie Table, resulting in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries, according to local authorities.
The blaze began around 5:20 PM, just as the evening dinner crowd was beginning to fill the 300-seat dining hall. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang, followed by plumes of smoke and flames erupting from the kitchen area. Within minutes, the entire structure was engulfed.
Topeka Fire Department responded swiftly with over a dozen emergency vehicles and more than 50 firefighters on the scene. Despite their efforts, the fire spread rapidly, trapping several patrons and staff inside. Fire Chief Mark Ellison confirmed that at least six people have been pronounced dead at the scene, and more than a dozen have been hospitalized with burns and smoke inhalation injuries.
“We are dealing with an incredibly tragic situation,” Ellison stated in a press briefing. “Our crews are still working to fully extinguish the fire and search for any additional victims.”
The identities of the deceased have not yet been released pending notification of family members. Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office have already begun assessing the cause, which remains unknown at this time. Foul play has not been ruled out.
The Prairie Table, known for its upscale Midwestern cuisine and live entertainment, has been a local landmark in Topeka for nearly 20 years.
Mayor Emily Warren expressed her condolences: “This is a heartbreaking day for our city. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We will do everything we can to support them and ensure a full investigation.”
Residents are urged to avoid the area as emergency crews continue their work. Further updates will follow as the situation develops.
