Breaking News: Massive Fire Engulfs el paso Largest Restaurant, Claims Lives of Local Athletes
El paso — Tragedy struck late Thursday evening as a massive fire tore through Greenville’s largest restaurant, The Southern Fork, claiming the lives of several local residents, including prominent community athletes.
Firefighters responded to the scene around 8:15 p.m. after several emergency calls reported heavy smoke and flames pouring from the historic building on Main Street. By the time fire crews arrived, the blaze had already spread through much of the two-story structure, trapping several patrons and staff inside.
Among the victims were members of the Greenville Falcons, a popular semi-professional football team. Authorities confirmed that at least three players, including rising star Marcus Dillard, 24, perished in the fire. The names of the other victims are being withheld pending family notifications.
“This is a devastating night for our community,” said Fire Chief Laura Jennings. “We lost not only a beloved local business, but also individuals who were the pride of this town. Our thoughts are with all the families affected.”
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire began in the kitchen area before rapidly spreading. Some patrons managed to escape through side exits, while others were overcome by smoke and heat. The building was at near-capacity due to a private event hosted by the Falcons.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest a possible gas leak, but officials have not ruled out other possibilities.
City officials have declared a state of emergency in the downtown district and urged residents to avoid the area.
