Building The Band’ Gets Netflix Premiere Date; Confirms Late Liam Payne As Judge

Netflix has set July 9 for the premiere of its music competition series Building the Band, with the late Liam Payne as guest judge.

Netflix greenlit and wrapped the show prior to Payne’s death last October and had faced a dilemma over how to proceed, intent on consulting the singer’s family on the decision. Liam Payne’s “family reviewed the series and is supportive of his inclusion,” Netflix said in a statement

Payne died after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires. Five people have been charged in connection with his death.

The series will air across three weeks: July 9, Episodes 101-104; July 16, Episodes 105-107 and July 23, Episodes 108-110

Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean will host the series. Nicole Scherzinger (The Pussycat Dolls) will serve as mentor and judge. Destiny’s Child’s Kelly Rowland also serves as guest judge.

Per the logline, “Building the Band brings together talented singers for a truly unique competition show where building the perfect band is all about chemistry. The singers are in complete control as they seek to form their very own bands in individual ‘booths’ without ever seeing each other. All they have to go on is musical compatibility, connection, chemistry and merit. What will happen when the bands finally meet, and looks, choreography, and style come into play? With incredible performances, compelling drama, and one big goal—to find the next great music band—the stage is set for an unforgettable experience.”

Cat Lawson, Alison Holloway, Katrina Morrison, Clara Elliot and Simon Crossley serve as executive producers. The series is produced by Remarkable Entertainment and Banijay UK.
