Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire is calling for a more level playing field in how College Football Playoff (CFP) teams are selected.
Speaking recently on the growing debate around conference strength and playoff inclusion, McGuire emphasized the need to remove preconceived biases when evaluating teams from different leagues.
“We’ve got to take some of the bias out of conferences — that, ‘This is a tougher conference because of this and this and this,’” McGuire said. “Let’s fight it out on the field.”
McGuire’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about the expanded CFP format and how teams are selected. With the rise of super conferences and realignment reshaping the landscape of college football, coaches and fans alike are questioning how much weight historical reputation and media narratives should carry.
Under the new 12-team playoff format, strength of schedule and conference prestige still play a major role in rankings, but McGuire argues that performance on the field should be the ultimate decider.
As the postseason model evolves, voices like McGuire’s highlight the growing demand for fairness, transparency, and on-field results to determine college football’s elite.
