Simon Cowell has expressed profound grief over the tragic death of Liam Payne, describing the former One Direction star as a “true talent” and remembering him with deep affection.
Payne, 31, died in October 2024 after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Authorities reported that he sustained multiple injuries leading to his death, and investigations are ongoing .
In a heartfelt Instagram tribute, Cowell, who first met Payne when he auditioned for The X Factor at age 14, wrote:
“Liam, I am devastated. Heartbroken. And I feel empty. Every tear I have shed is a memory of you.”
Cowell recalled telling the young Payne in 2008 that it wasn’t his time, but encouraged him to return. Two years later, Payne re-auditioned and was grouped with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik to form One Direction—a band that would go on to achieve global fame .
Reflecting on their relationship, Cowell shared:
“You came to see me last year. Not for a meeting. Just to sit and talk. And we reminisced about all of the fun times we had together. And how proud you were to be a Dad.”
He also spoke fondly of Payne’s son, Bear, whom he shared with singer Cheryl:
“I have met your son, Bear. He has your smile and that twinkle in his eyes you have. And he will be so proud of everything you achieved. And how you achieved it.”
Cowell emphasized the brotherhood among One Direction’s members, stating:
“I always thought of the 5 of you in the band as brothers. And reading their messages today I believe you were. And now Liam, I can see the effect you had on so many people. Because you left us too soon.”
