A host of WTA Tour stars are set to compete at the first women’s tournament staged at The Queen’s Club in London in over 50 years.
The WTA 500 grass-court event will be held from June 9 to 15 — the week after the French Open.
It will serve as one of the premier Wimbledon lead-in tournaments on the women’s tour, along with 500 events in Berlin and Bad Homburg.
Eight of the current top 15 players in the WTA Rankings, including four of the top 10, are on the entry list.
How many players will feature in the main draw?
The women’s singles main draw at the Queen’s Club Championships will feature 28 players, including 17 direct entrants, six qualifiers and four wildcards.
Which players have received wildcards?
Three of the four wildcards have been announced: Katie Boulter, Emma Raducanu and Naomi Osaka.
What Laura Robson said about the player field
Laura Robson, a former world No 27 and British No 1, is the tournament director for the Queen’s women’s event.
“This player list is yet further confirmation that spectators are in for a brilliant opening week of tennis at the HSBC Championships,” Robson said.
“These women are some of the fiercest competitors on the WTA Tour, and with so many grand slam winners set to take to the courts, the standard of tennis on show will be immense as they battle to be the first women’s winner at the Queen’s Club for over half a century.”
Have any players used a special ranking to enter?
Players who have been unable to compete in any tournaments due to injury or pregnancy for a minimum of six months are eligible to use the WTA protected ranking system.
The rule allows players to use the ranking they held at the time of their absence to enter eight tournaments, or 12 if they missed more than a year.
Two-time Wimbledon champion and former world No 2 Petra Kvitova, who is currently ranked 607th, has used a special ranking to enter. The Czech returned to the tour in February following the birth of her son in June last year.
